Veliko Tarnovo is a desired destination for Bulgarians and people from all over the world. As an emblem of Bulgarian history, this city has a huge cultural-historical and architectural heritage.

Like any trip, yours will probably start with choosing a place to stay. It’s no secret that the city is a desirable tourist destination and there are accommodations in Veliko Tarnovo suitable for every taste and preference – from small family hotels to four- and five-star hotels with conference rooms.

After choosing a time and place to stay, the next step is to make a list of the sights you want to visit. Here we can offer you a few pointers so that you don’t miss the really noteworthy places. The most famous and massively visited landmark in Veliko Tarnovo are the statues of Asenevtsi, which are located at a focal point in the city, near the very center. And if you have booked in a central hotel with a conference hall in Veliko Tarnovo, then the probability that the view from the window coincides with this monument, positioned on the rocky coast of Yantra, is very high. You probably don’t know, but the monument is dedicated to the four great Bulgarian kings from the Asenevtsi dynasty – Asen, Peter, Kaloyan and Ivan Asen II. The opening of the monument is connected with the 800th anniversary of the uprising of the brothers Asen and Peter.

The other well-known symbol of the city are the Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Momina fortresses, which also preserve the memory of the great Bulgarian rulers. During the period from spring to autumn, right at the entrance to the architectural complex, you can see artists dressed as Tsar Kaloyan and his wife, take pictures with them and even put on their clothes and remember the moment. It’s a memorable way to experience history. In recent years, the “sound and light” event, which takes place in Veliko Tarnovo several times a year, usually on memorable historical dates, has become popular and is free for all visitors and residents of the city. This sound and light performance is with the only location Tsarevets fortress and of course there are variations of several thematic performances. Every year the Sound and Light performances are part of the officially announced program of the Veliko Tarnovo region.
